1 Corinthians 7:1-16

Few things in life hold more potential for joy than does marriage. Few things in life hold more potential for pain than does marriage. What makes marriage so difficult? At the risk of oversimplification, there are two factors tearing at the fabric of every marriage. First, we live in a fallen world. The outside pressures of a sinful world seek to pull our marriages apart. Secondly, we are fallen creatures. The sinful, selfish impulses of our fallen natures are contrary to the sacrifice and unconditional love necessary to make marriage work.

In 1 Corinthians 7, Paul addressed the matter of marriage. This chapter turned the page from addressing reports he had heard about the church (1:11) to answering questions he had received from the church (7:1). Since he had dealt with sexual immorality in chapter six, the transition to marriage was a natural one. There are two fundamental principles about marriage in this passage.

1. The purpose of marriage in a fallen world, vv. 1-7

2. The permanence of marriage in a fallen world, vv. 8-16
