John 4:43-54

What sin sends a person to hell? Is it murder or adultery? Blasphemy or stealing? Or maybe a combination of these? As bad as those sins are, they do not condemn anyone to hell. You might be surprised to learn that unbelief is the only sin that condemns a person (John 3:18).

All of the aforementioned sins are merely how unbelief is demonstrated. In today’s passage, Jesus dealt with the unbelief of a group and an individual. As we have discovered over and over in these first four chapters of the Gospel of John, both truth and grace meet the demands of unbelief.

  • Jesus confronted unbelief with truth, vv. 43-48.
  • Jesus conquered unbelief with grace, vv. 49-54.

To overcome the unbelief in our own hearts, we must face the truth of our unbelief and receive His grace as the remedy.
