John 5:19-29

Who was Jesus truly? Was He just a remarkable human being? Did a collection of legends arise to create the majestic character of the New Testament? Some skeptics go so far as to say that Jesus never claimed to be God in the flesh. Passages like today’s text set the record straight. Remember, Jesus was answering the Jews’ accusation of verse 18 that He was “making Himself equal with God.”

In John 3:1-15, Jesus used the solemn verbal formula, “Truly, truly” to describe the equality of His work with the Father’s work.

• It’s true! The Son mirrors the Father’s work, vv. 19-23.
• It’s true! The Son gives eternal life, v. 24.
• It’s true! The Son raises the dead, vv. 25-29.

Truly Jesus was Immanuel, God with us.
