Daniel 1:8-21

450 years before Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were carried off to Babylon, an unnamed prophet confronted the high priest of Israel about the conduct of his two sons. In this pronouncement against Eli and his sons, this prophet declared a truth that is illustrated in each of the first six chapters of Daniel. “For those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed” (1 Samuel 2:30b).

In chapters 1,2,3, and 6 we read how God honored those who honored Him. In chapters 4 and 5 we read about how God dealt with those who dishonored Him.

The test of honoring God is how you respond when the pressure is on. Daniel and his three friends faced pressure situations of increasing intensity. With each challenge they exemplified a life that honored God.

1. Daniel’s resolve honored God, vv. 8-11
o His resolve was respectful
o His courage was contagious

2. Daniel’s request honored God, vv. 12-16
o Propose a creative solution
o Set a reasonable time
o Trust God for the results

3. God’s reward honored Daniel, vv. 17-21
o Divine ability
o Unique superiority
o Enduring longevity

Conclusion: This was just the beginning! God honored those who honored Him. It began with a choice – “Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself.” Remember, every decision leads to a destination.
